New festival celebrates fifteen years of Trestle Arts Base

New festival celebrates fifteen years of Trestle Arts Base

On Bank Holiday Monday 1 May between 2pm - 5pm Trestle opens its doors to launch a month long celebration for the 15th anniversary of Trestle Arts Base. Thanks to support from Arts Council England, the 15Festival brings together some of the best new theatre, dance and film alongside amazing backstage experiences, taster classes and family events for the local community.

Trestle's new Patron, the award-winning actress and comedian Nina Conti, will be joining them for a unique and intimate performance on Tuesday 23 May. The evening will be an amazing opportunity to see Nina up close, witness new material and experience the unique ventriloquism masks created by Trestle for her most recent international show 'In Your Face'. This evening is about raising funds to help improve Trestle's beautiful building and ensure it continues to serve the local community for another fifteen years. Read more...

As you would expect from this prestigious event, many internationally recognised stars will be performing. Talented local artists also feature heavily, including St Albans teenager Julian Trevelyan (laureate of the Long-Thibaud International Piano Competition and twice a BBC Young Musician semi-finalist), Harpenden-based Amici Voices, St Albans Cathedral Choir, St Albans Bach Choir and the St Albans Mosaic Chamber Choir. The IOF Fringe will offer still further talent with excellent local music, inspirational guests and chances for everyone to join in.

Events will take place from 10 to 22 July in historic buildings all across St Albans and also in prestigious London venues, and tickets are now on sale.

Large-scale events at St Albans Cathedral include Bernstein's Chichester Psalms with the Choirs of St Paul's Cathedral, Temple Church and St Albans Cathedral. Handel's Messiah will be conducted by Laurence Cummings in the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire’s Charity Concert Read more...

New Discoveries at Roman Site

New discoveries at roman site

The map of the ancient Roman city of Verulamium will have to be redrawn after archaeologists made a series of surprising discoveries. Essential work by the National Grid to re-lay a gas pipe gave the archaeologists a rare opportunity to look underground at this nationally significant archaeological site.

Where they once thought there was only a crossroads, they found compelling evidence for the town house of a wealthy person, which may have featured mosaic flooring. An initial assessment of finds from above the floor suggests the building was demolished in the third century AD.

The team was also excited to find the corner of the city wall, but no evidence of a tower at this point, as previously expected. The absence of a corner tower is significant as may suggest that the city walls were built as much for show as for defensive purposes. Read more...

Get ready for The Great Get Together

Residents in the St Albans District are being urged to start planning for the Great Get Together - a weekend of street parties, picnics, bake-off contests and barbecues. The fun event is intended to inspire all sectors of the community nationwide to celebrate what they have in common. It takes place on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 June, and anyone who wants to organise a street party is advised to start doing so soon.

Dozens of local organisations are expected to become involved including residents' associations, religious groups, youth clubs, charities and bands of friends and neighbours.

For practical advice on how to plan an event, organisers should check the website of St Albans City and District Council at: www.stalbans.gov.uk/eventsplanning. This page offers information on what is involved including tips on health and safety rules, car parking and publicity.  Read more...

St Albans Roads to be Microsurfaced

St Albans roads to be microsurfaced

Nearly 300 residential roads countywide including St Albans will get a makeover using a method known as micro surfacing. It involves spreading a thin layer of new road surface to seal the road from the elements, even out bumps and dips and restore grip. By sealing any cracks, it can prevent the formation of widespread potholes. The treatment is quick to apply and adds years to the life of the road.

Rob Smith, Deputy Director of Environment, said: 'This programme will help improve many of our local roads, particularly those that carry low or moderate levels of traffic'.

'We know improving road condition is very important to local residents and road users and this work will improve the surface of these roads and help head off potholes before they form. The new surface will last for years and, because it can be applied quickly, we’re able to improve the condition of more roads countywide. This programme of micro surfacing is just one example of our commitment  Read more...
