Mayor opens St Albans Clock Tower for summer

Mayor opens St Albans Clock Tower for summer

St Albans Mayor unlocked the door of the City's historic Clock Tower on Good Friday, 3 April, ready to welcome visitors for the summer season.

Cllr Geoff Harrison, Mayor of St Albans City and District, then climbed the 93 steps to the tower's roof, to enjoy the fine views of the City.

Members of St Albans Civic Society and St Albans & Hertfordshire Architectural & Archaeological Society (SAHAAS) accompanied the Mayor on his climb.

Volunteers from the Civic Society and SAHAAS open the Clock Tower for visitors every Saturday from Easter weekend to the end of September. Entry to the Clock Tower costs £1 per adult, accompanied children go free. Disabled access is difficult as there is a restricted entrance and 93 narrow steps to the top.

The tower is also opened up for visitors on special occasions, such as the switch-on of the Christmas lights.

New map of local cycling routes in St Albans

New map of local cycling routes in St Albans

The free map of cycling routes has been revamped to include the routes through Verulamium Park and the soon to be launched Green Ring around St Albans.

St Albans City and District Council has just published the updated map online. Free printed copies of the map are also available from the St Albans Tourist and Information Centre, Parish Councils and local libraries. Members of the St Albans Cycle Campaign provided the Council with assistance to update the map.

The map is part of a wider strategy to improve facilities and routes for cyclists in the District. The District Council recently completed new cycle routes through Verulamium Park and is working with Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) on the Green Ring walking and cycling route.
