Game of Names

St Albans bucks Game of Thrones trend for children's names

Last year, The Office for National Statistics reported large numbers of parents naming their children after their favourite characters from the fantasy series. Arya was the most popular of these and there were also many babies named Khaleesi, Daenerys and Sansa.

In Hertfordshire, however, parents have gone down a more traditional route and the most popular names for boys are Jack, George and Harry, while, for girls, parents chose Amelia, Emily and Sophie.

The name breakdown in St Albans and across the county is as follows:

Vote for Lussmanns ~ and you could win lunch for five

Lussmanns Fish & Grill, the independent group with restaurants in St Albans, Harpenden and Hertford, has been shortlisted for the prestigious Independent on Sunday / Food Made Good 'People's Favourite' Award 2016.

Diners were asked to nominate restaurants that not only serve delicious food, but also make a major difference to their community and minimize their impact on the environment. The panel of judges, which included Lisa Markwell, editor of The Independent on Sunday, whittled more than 600 nominations down to the shortlist of five, assessing them all against the three pillars of sustainability; sourcing, environment and society, as well as the critical extra ingredient - good food.

New Parking Charges Coming

New Parking Fees in City Centre

A new tariff for on-street car parking is to be introduced to help businesses in the St Albans District. Motorists will be able to pay 60p to park for half-an-hour in two-hour bays close to the main shopping centres. At the moment, they have to pay double that charge for a minimum one-hour stay.

The same half-hour tariff will also be tested out on one-hour bays for a six-month trial period. It is intended that the new charge will be of help to people who are making a quick trip to the shops. A higher turnover of visitors using the convenient spaces should also boost the trade of retailers and other businesses like estate agents. The one hour on-street tariff will rise by 10p to £1.30 and the two-hour tariff by 20p to £2.60.
