St Albans Museum and Gallery opens on 8 June

The new £7.75 million St Albans Museum + Gallery will open on Friday 8 June following a two-year restoration of the city's Georgian Grade II-listed Town Hall (built in 1831).

The museum and gallery is set over three floors, with a number of restored historic spaces and newly created state-of-the-art galleries. These spaces will be used to host regularly changing exhibitions and a vibrant programme of events. Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the fascinating history of the town hall itself, including its pre-Victorian assembly room, courtroom and cells.

Glazed links have been added to the first floor enabling visitors to walk around the entire building and to take in wonderful views of the city. A new temperature-controlled and secure basement gallery has been hand excavated under the building to house national touring exhibitions and contemporary art shows. The ground floor has also been renovated

Bob Golding new Patron of Alban Arena

Bob Golding new Patron of Alban Arena

As the 50th anniversary of The Alban Arena fast approaches there has naturally been a lot of reminiscing over some of the great events that have occurred here over the years. The many musicians, comedians, artists and truly great talent that have graced our stage during the last half-century have led to some fantastic and memorable moments, not to mention some ever-lasting friendships; perhaps none so close as our very own local legend, Bob Golding.

Going forward, we wanted to cement our values as a community-driven entertainment venue and with this in mind, who better to partner with than our much-loved pantomime regular. So it is our honour and privilege to announce that Bob Golding has agreed to become the patron of The Alban Arena.

Speaking about his new honorary title, Bob said 'I'm deeply honoured to have been asked to become Patron of the

Grants available for Community Groups

Grants available for Community Groups

Voluntary and community groups have eight weeks to apply for grants from a £55,000 fund operated by St Albans City and District Council. The money is intended to support projects and activities that benefit the whole community, particularly the most vulnerable people.

Grants of between £500 and £5,000 are distributed annually from the Council's Community Grants Fund. The fund is administered with the help of Community Central St Albans, an organisation that provides advice to charities and encourages volunteering.

Applications for this year can be made from Tuesday 8 May to noon on Monday 2 July. A launch event is to be held to provide further information.

Fourteen projects were funded last year including a grant of £2,000 to Small Acts of Kindness. This was for a scheme to help older,
