New 6.5 mile walking and cycling 'green ring' opens

The St Albans Green Ring – a continuous 6.5 mile cycling and walking route around the City – is now open.

The ring connects many of the City’s green spaces, beauty spots and heritage sites as well as schools, workplaces, leisure facilities and residential areas. It formed part of St Albans City and District Council’s 2009 Vision for the City and is intended to encourage green transport and exercise.

The route extends from Townsend in the north to Fleetville in the east, Sopwell in the south and the Verulam Estate to the west. Among the places linked by the Green Ring are Batchwood, Clarence Park, The Wick, St Albans Rail Station, the Sopwell Ruins, Westminster Lodge, the Roman Museum and Theatre, Verulamium Park and the Cathedral.

Some 13 green spaces are connected by the ring along with at least nine child-related destinations such as schools, play areas and parks.
Game Plan exhibition at St Albans Museum + Gallery from 1 December

Game Plan exhibition at St Albans Museum + Gallery from 1 December

Are you a Scrabble champion? A wannabe chess grandmaster? Or a Monopoly megalomaniac?

Find out at St Albans Museum + Gallery as it hosts Game Plan: Board Games Rediscovered - a major exhibition from the V&A Museum of Childhood. This vibrant exhibition celebrates the joy, excitement and occasional frustration of playing board games.

Displayed in the Weston Gallery, this family-friendly exhibition presents some of the most iconic, enthralling and visually striking games from the V&A’s outstanding national collection. Alongside current family favourites such as Cluedo and Trivial Pursuit, and traditional games such as chess, the exhibition looks at historical board games such as The Game of the Goose and beautifully-designed games from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Council Tax rise of 2.39% recommended

Council Tax rise of 2.39% recommended

The Council’s Cabinet, its decision-making executive, put forward a programme for 2019/20 at its meeting on 22 November and recommended an average 2.39% rise in the District Council’s element of Council Tax for the next financial year which begins on 1 April. This is in line with the inflation rate for the year to October 2018 of 2.4%.

The recommendations form part of a Corporate Plan and Budget for the five years from 2019 to 2024 that will now go before a meeting of the Full Council in December for approval.

The priority projects are:

Housing – redeveloping Wavell House into 24 flats for the over-55s and Betty Entwistle House into 40 flats for people with care needs; creating more than 80 affordable or social rent homes in three Council-owned sites; continuing a programme to improve energy efficiency at Council-owned houses and flats.
