Support “renaissance: St Albans” - the campaign to create a new museum and gallery in the heart of the city.
Community fundraising to transform St Albans Town Hall into a fantastic museum and gallery got off to a cracking start at the Alban Street Festival on 22 June. The Mayor of St Albans City and District was on hand to launch the community fundraising campaign for the “renaissance: St Albans” project.
The goal of the campaign is to raise £1.7 million to match funds from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Council to deliver the £6.75 million conversion of the Town Hall into a vibrant cultural hub for the city centre. The St Albans Museums and Galleries Trust is leading the fundraising effort with the support of the District Council and the University of Hertfordshire (UHArts).
Members and supporters of the St Albans Museums and Galleries Trust, University of Hertfordshire and the Museum Service gave hundreds of residents and visitors the opportunity to find out more about the project and handle some museum objects.
Residents were encouraged to become ambassadors for the new museum and gallery and were given promotional material and donation forms to use in their fundraising.
Residents were also able to view early architect plans for the new museum and gallery and to share their ideas for the future of the venue. They also experienced first hand what the Town Hall has to offer by going on special guided tours of the building and its courtroom and cells.
The St Albans Camera Club captured the day by taking photographs of the activities.
Over 100 residents have signed up to support the project and to find out more about how they can help. As well as donating to the campaign residents can organise fund-raising events and attend future consultation events.
Every individual or group that raises more than £1,000 will be given special recognition and will become “renaissance Champions”.
Donations can be sent to the Trust care of the museums. More details about donating to the project can be found here: http://www.stalbansmuseumsandgalleriestrust.org.uk/support-us/
A number of successful fundraising events have already taken place, including, a night of Mediaeval Music, held in Kingsbury Barn, organised by St Albans Civic Society. Debenhams Ottaway Solicitors have also designated the Trust as one of its charities of the year.
The next event is a Charity Performance of 'Allo 'Allo on Tuesday 8th July 2014. The Trust is selling tickets for the performance. Doors open at 7:30pm for an 8:00pm start. The tickets are £12 and can be bought from the Museum of St Albans, Hatfield Road or Verulamium Museum.
Mike Gray, Chair of the St Albans Museums and Galleries Trust added: “As well as making donations, we also want everyone to tell us what they want to see inside the new museum and gallery. We need to hear from people who live and work in St Albans and visitors to the City to help shape the new museum and gallery.”
Chris McIntyre, Dean of Cultural Affairs at the University of Hertfordshire, said “UHArts is excited to be part of the group bringing this fantastic new resource to the city. It will combine museum and gallery provision in a new and exciting way and replace temporary galleries that worked out of our old Law School Building and the Hatfield Road Museum with an international quality permanent venue.”
