Polar Bear Plunge 2017

On 1 January 2016, the Sub Aqua Club pool on Cottonmill Lane was the venue for the inaugural St Albans Polar Bear Plunge. This was a chance for brave people to plunge into the icy water of this outdoor, unheated pool in aid of charity. The event attracted 151 plucky plungers ranging from 5 to 66 years in age and well over 150 spectators to cheer them on.

The event raised £5,093.28 and the organisers hope that in 2017 the second plunge will raise even more for Earthworks St Albans and Rennie Grove Hospice Care.

Food, hot drinks, postcards, musical entertainment, raffle, a bar, and glitter tattoos (waterproof of course) guarantee a bustling event for a unique start to your New Year.   All plucky plungers receive a warming hot chocolate, a medal and huge rounds of applause and cheers. Fancy dress costumes are welcome, and prizes are awarded - 2016 saw a penguin, some Santas, a troupe of snowman, a giraffe, BananaMan, a ghostbuster and even Buzz Lightyear.
