London singer-songwriter Wolfe Hogan drags a classical violin through a country hedge backwards - bashing, strumming, looping, soloing, shuffling and even singing into his fiddle. He creates super rich soundscapes, delivering touching songs full of social commentary and British humour. What’s more: the lockdown of 2020 provided some fruity inspiration and lots of time to hone those fiddle chops. Not to be missed!Support from your hostKaspar 'Berry' Rapkin plays delta blues in the raw, gritty, and low down style it was intended to be played in while also adding his modern twist to it. Kaspar incorporates his own stories and wisdom into his blues music while also paying homage to the likes of Bukka White, Son House, and Charley Patton. Kaspar is an emulator of the music that shaped popular music as we know it." Please note, this show is limited capacity and will follow current government guidelines. • Mon 14 Jun - Shame (Socially Distanced Show) - SOLD OUT

    5:00 PM

shameFollowing in the footsteps of unflinching musicians and writers such as Swell Maps, Television Personalities and Irvine Welsh, South London’s bracing post-punk outfit shame features vocalist Charlie Steen, guitarists Sean Coyle-Smith and Eddie Green, bassist Josh Finerty, and drummer Charlie Forbes. The quintet met in school and formed shame in 2014 while still in their teens. A family connection led them to practice at the Queen’s Head, a gritty Brixton pub that was also home to Fat White Family. With consistently raucous energy and a frontman who knew how to turn the quietest of rooms into stage diving pits of glory, word spread that shame were the most exciting live band the UK had to offer. The band signed to Dead Oceans in 2017 and quickly recorded their debut at Rockfield, the same studio as Oasis’ Definitely Maybe. The result was Songs of Praise, which on the day of release in early 2018 saw the band on The Guardian’s front page lauded as the leaders of a new wave of guitar music. For the next year the band toured the world over, pushing themselves harder with each show, leaving every audience stunned and enamoured by the power of shame. Returning with their first new music since Songs of Praise, the James Ford produced "Alphabet" is a burst of energy that blazes bright and fast. It’s a restless and relentless track that feels familiar yet bigger and bolder than anything the band have done before, signalling the arrival of a new era of shame. TICKETS:Tickets are only being sold as groups of 2, 3, 4 or 5 and are priced at £30 / £45 / £60 / £75 per group and are very limited due to social distancing measures, there will be no ticket sales on the door.Pre-Sale - Wednesday 27 November 2020 10amGeneral Sale - Friday 29 November 2020 10amPre-order shame's new LP 'Drunk Tank Pink' and receive a code to access a pre-sale link. • Sat 26 Jun - WIINK / Vigilantes / Framatics

    8:00 PM

WIINKBorn of a friendship kindled in Secondary School, WIINK has stood the test of time as a tight three-piece through their formative years. Currently residing in a slug-infested house in Leeds, the trio has been churning out singles and playing gigs where possible, constantly striving to get their upbeat guitar-driven tunes into consenting earholes. Their four years on the scene have garnered them support slots with Strange Bones, Rascalton, Childcare and John Hassall of The Libertines, as well as their own headline shows in Leeds and their home base of St Albans. Whether you appreciate interesting lyricism about men made of grass and upchucking pasta, songs that stylistically range from dancey ska-fusion to lovestruck ballads or the simple pleasure of watching three sexy twenty-somethings play music, WIINK has something for you. VigilantesChampioned by BBC Radio 1's Huw Stephens & Phil Taggart, Vigilantes have had continued airplay on BBC Radio 1, Radio 6 & the R1 Specialist Show. Vigilantes are continuing the British tradition of taking American sounds and stuffing it with classic British tone and have been placed on Radio 1's Best Of BBC Introducing playlist. Noted by Fresh on the Net’s Tom Robinson as ‘On a mission’, Vigilantes are known as one of the hardest working live bands in the UK circuit. Vigilantes have deservedly shared stages with the likes of Slaves, Circa Waves, Electric Six and The Subways. Quotes: "American influences with British hearts" - Huw Stephens, BBC Radio 1 "There's good and there's very good. This is very good" - Phil Taggart, BBC Radio 1 "The power and tightness of the playing. Vigilantes will blow your socks off live" - Tom Robinson, BBC Radio 6, Fresh On The Net FRAMATICSUK alternative rock band FRAMATICS combine raw guitars, thundering beats and panoramic synths to create an explosive sonic identity. Band onstage 10.30pm - Free Entry Emerging blinking into the sunlight after 16 months of enforced hibernation, Half Life are delighted to announce their second tilt upon the stage of Hertfordshire's most revered music venue, The Horn St Albans! Since this was also their last gig it constitutes bizarre back to back gigs albeit with a whopping great gap in the middle. Half Life have spent their isolation time learning new songs to delight and energise a crowd whom we suspect will be so up for it by July they might need lead weights to hold them down. So come along and enjoy the novelty of being in the pub, drinking with mates you can finally hug, and try not to get freaked out by other people very close to you bouncing up and down to the band's well-trodden riffs on classic rock and indie covers, from Muse to the Cure (hmm, ironic, we know), The Hives and Franz Ferdinand with a liberal sprinkling of The Strokes and a spoonful of The Arctic Monkeys. We can't wait to see you all - it's been too long!! Half Life is a rock covers band based in St Albans, and formed in 2018 largely to give them an excuse to spend more time in the pub in the name of art. Producing a heady cocktail of rock and indie covers so intoxicating it has been banned in 83 countries, they thrash their way through a musical smorgasbord from the Stones to Muse with some cheeky Oasis and Blur action in between. So whether you’re a Basket Case, a Teenage Dirtbag or just want to Look Good on the Dancefloor, Half Life will guarantee to get the room rocking! Half Life Website Find out more...

  • Wed 07 Jul - The Maida Vales

    8:00 PM

The Maida Vales The doorway to the melodic world of Paul Littler, Joe Abraso, Matteo Cervellin and Alfio Caracciolo. Four North London based lads on a musical mission to fill your heads with melodic madness and musical genius! The Maida Vales draw their musical influences from across Europe with band members deriving from as far afield as Milan and Sicily, Italy to St.Albans, England. Their refreshing approach to music sees The Maida Vales avoid the usual suspect sounds that we've heard time and time again. Instead, the band favour the more eccentric tones and feel good numbers of the early Stones, Kinks, Ska Skanking Upsetters and the more recent, Dandy Warhols. Paul’s lyrics explore the tremendous highs and the bottomless lows of a middle class musician living in the heart of the concrete jungle. Trials and tribulations, Love and loss, excess and madness wound together through beautiful melodies, raucous riffs, driving bass lines and powerhouse blues beats…oh yes and did we mention the Tequila? The Maida Vales have been hailed as a 'breath of fresh air' in the current climate of guitar bands, which has paved the way to a string of high profile shows across the UK and Europe. All music graduates, The Maida Vales exercise a cool and quaint approach to song writing whilst maintaining the unexpected creative mind. With an eclectic melodic original set and a ‘balls out’ classic rock n roll covers set packed to the brim with musical goodness and raucous on stage energy, the lads have it covered!TICKETS: £5 Adv / £7 Door (subject to availability)Ages 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian) Find out more...

Lady BirdFormed in the archetypal english town of Tunbridge Wells, Lady Bird’s shared desire to spread lofty ideas has led to them creating some of the most exciting music to come out of anywhere in the country. While Punk can sometimes be seen as a reductive term, Lady Bird hark back to its deeper meaning, exemplifying an attitude of rebellion, freedom and bold ideas. Lady Bird’s sound manages to be both literary and ultra-aggressive. Joe and Alex lay down a frame work of stripped back rock, heavy and pulverising, but never losing its sense of melody. Over this Don plays the role of narrator, spinning suburban yarns as metaphors for the trials of 21st century life and the desire for personal and spiritual growth. His distinctively English tones are reminiscent of Mike Skinner - telling tales of a Kentish Wetherspoons rather than London clubs - all the while a stripped down Black Flag thrashing away behind. The boys’ shared musical influences range from The Blockheads to Thelonius Monk. Their sound is also buoyed by a deeper philosophical bent, something Joe puts down to their closeness as a unit. “Since playing together we’ve become central pillars in each other’s lives and because of that there’s all sorts of deeper discussions and musings that take place which influence what the creative output is". 'BRAINWASH MACHINE SETTING' EP is set for release June 2020, via the bands own record label Purple Stains, in conjunction with JägerMusik. The WoodentopsTaking punk's D.I.Y. ideals and applying them to stripped-down acoustic pop, the Woodentops achieved a great deal of critical success in the short time they were together. Formed in the early '80s in Northampton, England, the group consisted of Rolo McGinty (vocals, guitar), Frank de Freitas (bass), Simon Mawby (guitar), Benny Staples (drums), and Alice Thompson (keyboards). The band released its debut single, "Plenty," on Food Records; the record led to a contract with Rough Trade. Throughout 1985, the Woodentops released a series of singles, all written by McGinty, that began to attract an audience in the U.K. The group released its acclaimed debut album, Giant, in 1986. The following year, the Woodentops began experimenting with their sound, adding tougher guitars and electronics as McGinty became increasingly interesting in dance music. These changes were particularly evident in their live show, as shown by their 1987 live recording, Hypno Beat Live, recording during the group's American tour. (The tour also introduced new keyboard player Anne Stephenson, formerly of the Communards, who replaced Thompson.) Featuring the contributions of professional studio musicians Bernie Worrell and Doug Wimbish, among others, 1988's Wooden Foot Cops on the Highway continued the group's experimentations with rhythmic and sonic textures. While the Woodentops scored a minor radio hit in Los Angeles with "Stop This Car" and they developed a sizable following in Japan, extensive touring in 1991 and 1992 failed to widen their fan base, and at the end of 1992, the Woodentops broke up. Rolo McGinty worked in electronic music and sang with Gary Lucas' group Gods & Monsters, while Simon Mawby was briefly a member of the group House of Love. In 2006, McGinty assembled a new lineup of the Woodentops for a reunion tour; joining original members McGinty, Mawby, and de Freitas were drummer Paul Ashby, pianist Richard Thomas, and keyboardist Aine O'Keeffe. The Woodentops played live periodically over the next several years, and in 2014 they returned with their first new album in over 25 years, Granular Tales. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine TICKETS: £18 Adv / £20 Door (subject to availability) Ages 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian) Find out more...

Within a matter of months the 2-Tone bands had stolen our hearts and conquered the charts with a non-stop procession of unforgettable hits: 'Gangsters', 'A Message to you Rudy', 'Too Much Too Young', 'The Prince', 'One Step Beyond', 'My Girl' ..."An extract from Dance Craze by Garry BushellOn 21st July 1979 at the Electric Ballroom in London, the Specials played a gig with Madness, Dexy's Midnight Runners and Selecter. That's a gig that all 2-Tone rude boys and rude girls would die to see, and thought would never happen. The Specials and Madness on the same bill!In truth, it will probably never happen now ... but you can get the next best thing!Special Kinda Madness play a truly authentic set from each band, matching the incredible energy of The Specials with the unforgettable iconic songs of Madness. Chubby & The Gang West London five-piece Chubby and the Gang are balanced by two energies – a casual “fuck it” on one side, an active “fuck off” on the other. For every moment of punk imperfection, there’s an intricate flurry of detail.  Made up of musicians from across the consistently thriving and criminally overlooked UK hardcore scene (ft. The Chisel, Big Cheese and more), Chubby and the Gang marinate its characteristic speed and sick-of-it-all energy in a mixture of 50s pop sounds. The result is a prickly take on the older, more melodic genres that punk derives from, chewing them up and spitting them out into something mangled but revitalised. Through sheer force of strength, their debut album Speed Kills pummelled its way out of the local hardcore scene and across the Atlantic, where it was met with a landslide of critical acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork and Rolling Stone. • Tue 09 Nov - Declan Welsh & The Decadent West

    8:00 PM

Declan Welsh & The Decadent WestDeclan Welsh is a songwriter and poet from Glasgow. With his band, The Decadent West they create music that is unapologetic, direct and with a message of humanity. With performances in Palestine (as part of a Glaswegian cultural exchange), The Great Escape and London Fashion Week under their belt in the last year, Welsh and his band are ready to take the next by storm.Out June 1st, the Glaswegian outfit’s debut EP ‘All My Dreams Are Dull’ offers a snapshot into the mind of the young poet as he he muses about the banality of modern living as his band charge through anthemic rock songs drenched in chorus and filled with youthful energy. From the nihilistic, festival ready lead single ‘Lull’ to the Serge Gainsbourg indebted ‘Do What You Want’, Welsh explores themes of sexual liberation and toxic masculinity, with anti-fascist live favourites ‘Nazi Boys’ and ‘No Pasaran’ seeing him at his most scathing, unapologetically expressing his intolerance of the intolerant. ‘Rare is it these days to find someone which you can foresee people actually making an emotional investment in. Declan Welsh is, by all accounts, one such individual.’ - The Line Of Best Fit'Artists with genuine integrity and something relevant to say, Welsh and band are a must see.' - The Scotsman'...there’s an immense sense of pride for the musician who’s become integral to the scene in Scotland using music to make the world a better place.' - Tenement TV TICKETS: £6 Adv / £8 Door (subject to availability)Ages 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian) Find out more...

Hayseed DixieHayseed Dixie was formed in the summer of 2000 on the front porch of a cabin in the Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee, when after drinking enough whiskey to float a battleship across the Sahara Desert, it became suddenly obvious to the boys that the "Lost Highway" of Hank Williams and the "Highway To Hell" of AC/DC were the same damned road. The rest of the world first got a taste of the boys on April 17, 2001 with the release of their first album, titled "A Hillbilly Tribute To AC/DC".The band has since gone on to record 13 further albums containing both original songs and reinterpretations of previously known works, albeit in their own inimitable style. Having sold over half a million albums worldwide and having played more than 1,000 live shows on every continent except Antarctica, Hayseed Dixie are acknowledged as the creators of the musical genre "Rockgrass."TICKETS: £18.50 Advance (subject to availability)Ages 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian)Tickets may be available on the door but we strongly advise you purchase them in advance to avoid disappointment Find out more...

Emily Capell Emily Capell is a singer/songwriter from North West London with a story or ten to share. Raised on a diet of Johnny Cash, The Clash, The Smiths, Mod culture and the top 40, Emily's approach to song writing is eclectic. Featuring a mixture of blues, indie, pop and punk. Her musical stylings draw from a pool deep and wide and is affectionately described as sounding like the adopted daughter of Jamie T and Billy Bragg, and a distant relative of The Clash and The Libertines. She tells Blues inflected indie pop tales of life's frustrations and elations. Whether she's railing against the wrongs of the world, getting a little frisky or inventing a new dance craze Emily will pull you in and spin you round so quickly you'll wonder why you ever bothered with dull generic boys with guitars.Emily states "I wouldn't do music if it wasn't for Joe Strummer, Joe was one of a kind in his song writing, performing and way of life. He could do all genres: rock, reggae, rap, ska, country, punk, everything! He never sold out either. His last gig was a benefit gig for the fire fighters, he wasn't interested in money he was interested in music and people. Joe was the last true rock star, the definition of a legend. RIP my hero Joe!"Emily has had her tracks played on stations including BBC 6Music, Radio X and BBC London. She has performed live at a multitude of venues and festivals across the country. And very recently Emily was asked to perform for HRH Prince Charles at 100 Club with press from all over the world in attendance.Emily's album Combat Frock was released on 5th October 2019. It is an eclectic mix of Ska, Reggae, Punk, with a drop of a Johnny Cash vibe too. A new album is planned for 2021.TICKETS: £10 Adv / £12 Door (subject to availability)Ages 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian)Tickets may be available on the door but we strongly advise you purchase them in advance to avoid disappointment Find out more...

Porridge Radio *** MERCURY PRIZE 2020 NOMINEE *** Beginning as Dana Margolin’s sadcore bedroom project, Porridge Radio developed into an idiosyncratic post-punk 4-piece after she moved to Brighton and met her future bandmates. They inelegantly knot together Margolin's vicious, furious emotional outpourings with beautiful pop melodies, and have shared stages with the likes of Soccer Mommy, Alex G, Cherry Glazerr, Goat Girl, Dream Wife and Lydia Lunch. After a series of demos, and the growing legend of their intense live shows, full-band LP 'Rice, Pasta and Other Fillers' came out via Memorials of Distinction in 2016. Recorded in a garden shed, their lofi debut documents struggles with life, love and boredom, and showcases the scrapbook absurdism at Porridge Radio's core. In early 2019 Porridge Radio made an eagerly anticipated return with their first studio-recordings, the singles ‘Give / Take’ and ‘Don’t Ask Me Twice’. The two tracks offer the first glimpse of an increasingly refined sound, whilst maintaining the earnest vitality of their earlier work. The band's Secretly Canadian debut, Every Bad, is a culmination of what has been in their head for some time; the record they have been waiting for the means to record. The record is due 13 March 2020, & arrives full of grand, sweeping ambition – with vocals so urgent that it often feels like it is moved by compulsion rather than choice, with all the rawness of early Karen O, and influences as disparate as Charli XCX and The Cranberries.Tickets - £9 Adv / £11 Door (subject to availability)Ages 14+ (Under 18s accompanied by parent/guardian) Find out more...

  • Wed 26 Jan - Grant-Lee Phillips

    8:00 PM

Grant-Lee Phillips+ Special Guests TBA https://www.grantleephillips.com/https://www.facebook.com/grantleephil/ Many singer/songwriters are considered either strong vocalists who can also write or gifted composers who can sing a bit. Grant-Lee Phillips, on the other hand, is an exception, a tunesmith with an impressive command of both lyrics and melody who also possesses an instrument that's full of expressive character. Phillips' voice has a smoky texture paired with a honeyed smoothness, and his music is concise and graceful, matching the thoughtful romanticism of his verses. Phillips initially earned a significant reputation as the leader of the group Grant Lee Buffalo, who broke through with their debut album, 1993's Fuzzy. After going solo, he delivered a consistently strong body of work, with 2001's Mobilize, 2009's Little Moon, and 2016's The Narrows as standouts.
