THE NINTH WAVEIf there’s one defining characteristic of The Ninth Wave, it’s how the fast-rising Glasgow four-piece mix light and dark. Sonically, they shake the walls. It’s dissonance purified. On paper, they could be the kind of band who’d turn decibel levels up at shows just to mess with people’s heads. But there’s a pop pulse running through their songs. For every bolt of raw noise, there’s a sugar coating. The band test the resolve of post-punk, drone and shoegaze, but the end result is a dazzling meeting ground between concrete and candy. Their pivotal moment as a band so far took place when they worked with esteemed producer Dan Austin (Massive Attack, Pixies, Sløtface). It was here where the group’s distinct, light-versus-dark sound truly began to find its own identity. “I don’t think any of us realised, ‘This is what we wanna sound like’, until we were in the studio actually making the songs,” states frontman Haydn Park-Patterson. They don’t sit down and blueprint what they end up recording - instead, the process is defined by intuition and gut instinct. “It was automatic,” they say. This is a band chasing their own momentum. Darkness lines the seams on ‘Reformation EP’, which declares “time won’t stop for you” over a heady synth thud, is a ballsy anthem in waiting. The band’s lyricism enters the abyss: “You are killing me, again and again and again.” Whether it’s a relationship turned sour, or the feeling of inner claustrophobia, the band aren’t shy in tackling difficult subjects. As their sound continues to become more fully-realised, The Ninth Wave’s visual side goes hand in hand. Connected to Glasgow’s art scene, they collaborated with artist Dylan Moore creating an engrossing wall of melted red plastic - the kind you might find in an underground club or Berlin’s darkest corners, like a Dali painting spread thin - to act as the band’s backdrop. This emphasis on the visual side is backed up in ‘Reformation’’s evil-pivoted video, which captures the fear and horror of secret cults. The same applies to on-stage attire - black lipstick, refusal to wear clothes outside of primary colour parameters. None of this is calculated, it’s just how the band choose to express themselves. Park-Patterson says his distinct look can sometimes provoke confused reactions – “It’s fun to make people stare at you. You can see in their faces, ‘Who are these pricks’?” – but why exist to please everyone? Everything about this band fits together - the music, the visuals, the attire, the mentality. They know where they’re headed. The Ninth Wave are still no doubt finding their feet, but they have the look of a band releasing what they stand for more and more by the day. It’s rare you’ll find that in a new band, especially one still taking their first steps. “We’re finding that individuality. We’re not just ‘a Glasgow band’ - we’re a band called The Ninth Wave.” SOURDOUGHKick Pistol Tickets: £4 Advance / £6 Door Find out more...

  • Fri 30 Nov - Circa Waves - SOLD OUT

    8:00 PM

Circa WavesIndie rock band Circa Waves was formed in Liverpool in May 2013 by guitarist and singer Keiran Shuddall, who had decided to "knuckle down" and commit fully to music after spending years in a succession of no-hope garage bands. After writing a batch of songs and putting some demos online, he recruited second guitarist Joe Falconer, bassist Sam Rourke, and drummer Sian Plummer (male, despite his name), and the band undertook a few short tours of the U.K. and Europe. Their melodic, propulsive rock sound, heavily inspired by the Strokes and also often compared to the Vaccines, was well-received by audiences, and such a buzz built around them that they were soon offered a deal with Transgressive Records, erstwhile home of Foals, the Subways, and Mystery Jets. Their debut single, the double-A-side "Get Away"/"Good for Me," was released in December 2013 and was almost immediately hailed the "Hottest Record in the World" by taste-making BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe. In 2015, Circa Waves released their debut full-length album, Young Chasers, on Virgin/EMI. The reception they received for their debut instilled the band with a greater sense of confidence, as a result they returned to the studio almost immediately after touring; with their renewed vigor they created a heavier, beefier sophomore record, 2017's Different Creatures.TICKETS: £15 Adv - SOLD OUTAges 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian) Find out more...

Sphynx Sphynx is a long-time fixture of the Austin music scene; they were even honored in 2014 with a City Hall proclamation declaring February 13 ‘Sphynx Day’ in Austin. Now, after 7 years of relentless touring, Austin’s homegrown secret is out. The band had a breakout year in 2017, releasing 2 EPs, ‘Floppy Disco’ and ‘Space Camp,’ and playing packed venues and festivals across the US opening for top acts like Questlove and Walk The Moon. That momentum continued into 2018 with the February release of ‘Patterns,’ a synthwave groove illustrating the band’s penchant for timeless hooks with a modern edge. The single was streamed over 43,000 times in its first week and received independent radio play across the US, UK, and Mexico. ‘Patterns’ also caught the attention of NPR Music’s All Songs Considered, who said “Sphynx is like Tame Impala if Kevin Parker grew up on a healthy diet of disco” and called ‘Patterns’ “an effortless, high octane jam.” Sphynx made their maiden voyage to the UK in early March where they logged 6 headline performances for enthusiastic crowds; receiving praise from the prominent UK magazine, The Music Site and connecting with London songwriters and radio DJs. The band flew back to Austin in time for 6 more shows at SXSW 2018, receiving a warm welcome at their annual ‘Sphynx & Friends Day Party’ and headlining for a capacity crowd at the popular MidCoast Takeover showcase. With a string of videos and singles set for release and 2018 appearances at festivals in the US and Europe, Sphynx’s buzz is just beginning. Years spent sleeping in vans and performing in dive bars have shaped a band with a fresh take on pop music and a stadium-worthy live show. • Wed 30 Jan - Pip Blom

    8:00 PM

Pip BlomIn 2017, Pip Blom released three tracks written as a full band: the jangling fuzz of 'School', Courtney Barnett-esque 'Babies Are A Lie' and 'I Think I'm In Love' – a ramshackle spiral of needling guitar lines and rattling hooks, set for re-release on XXX. Earning the band fans in Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens and Mark Riley (who asked them in to record two 6Music sessions during the year), alongside mentions in NME, DIY, The Line of Best Fit and more, it showed that Pip's inklings towards what the music could turn into were correct.A Dutch tour with Amsterdam peers Canshaker Pi, meanwhile, gave the trio a necessary kick into gear on stage. “At first when we started we were terrified and we hardly moved on stage. Buttouring with Canshaker Pi helped us so much,” enthuses Pip. “They were so energetic, it was insane. We wanted to be like them. In the end, I think that's had a lot of influence on the songs that I write at the moment too. I want our songs to be vibrant and energetic. I want them to reflect what we are trying to be live.”Now, heading into 2018, Pip Blom are ready to put all these formative steps into action. Already confirmed for a string of dates supporting Franz Ferdinand in Holland, and with a Radio 1 session with Huw coming imminently, the building blocks are already combining to form something with real crossover potential. “I just like the thrill of doing something new,” shrugs Pip. “We’ve still got a long way to go, but hey: you should always dream big.”TICKETS: £8 Adv / £10 DoorAges 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian) Find out more...

The Spitfires take in a wide range of influences from reggae and ska through to punk and soul. This melting pot has helped infuse the band’s own sharp sound and style. Their work ethic and acute social commentary has made this fiercely independent band one of the most popular underground success stories in the UK right now.Clash Magazine says its “Spiky, rebellious rock ‘n’ roll delivered with no small degree of street smarts and style” and John Robb from Louder Than War thinks “The Spitfires are musical street fighters with a genuine passion”. The band have released three albums – ‘Response’ in 2015, ‘A Thousand Times’ in 2016 and ‘Year Zero’, which was out in July 2018. Year Zero reached number 1 in the UK Independent Chart as well as reaching 8 in the UK Vinyl Chart. He toured with more friends and Xtra Mile family Skinny Lister, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. and Will Varley, as well as fellow working-class hero Billy Bragg. He skirted the fringes of the island with a set of dates in lesser-played Scottish towns. And he ended a year of touring with a UK and European jaunt with eternal folk travellers The Levellers, in somewhat of a dream support slot. Now, as always, he’s thinking big and now’s the time to see Seán get his band in on the act for this full UK tour in February and March 2019, with 21 stops and hardly a day off in between. Within a matter of months the 2-Tone bands had stolen our hearts and conquered the charts with a non-stop procession of unforgettable hits: 'Gangsters', 'A Message to you Rudy', 'Too Much Too Young', 'The Prince', 'One Step Beyond', 'My Girl' ..."An extract from Dance Craze by Garry BushellOn 21st July 1979 at the Electric Ballroom in London, the Specials played a gig with Madness, Dexy's Midnight Runners and Selecter. • Sat 21 Sep - Bootleg Blondie

    9:00 PM

BOOTLEG BLONDIE is the official Debbie Harry & Blondie tribute band, the only Blondie tribute to play the legendary CBGB’s in New York City before it's demise in 2006 and to have the honour to be mentioned on Blondie’s 11th album ‘Pollinator’. Lead vocalist Debbie Harris appeared on two shows for BBC1 when she was picked out of 15,000 applicants to represent Debbie Harry on ‘Even Better Than The Real Thing’ hosted by Paddy McGuinness. The show drew in nearly 4 million viewers on the pilot episode alone. Debbie Harris and Bootleg Blondie have played the Isle Of Wight Festival, the 100 Club, the Hammersmith Palais, The Electric Ballroom in London, Eric’s in Liverpool, and have opened up for amongst others The Undertones, Slade, The Beat, Bad Manners, Heaven 17, Toyah, Hazel O’Connor, Tony Hadley, David Essex and Nick Kershaw and can be seen at all the major venues and festivals around the UK and Europe.Debbie Harris and the boys have met the REAL Blondie and are officially endorsed by the band. Debbie Harry got in touch in 2006 when she heard we were playing CBGB’s in New York City to wish us good luck with our show and when Clem Burke, Blondie's charismatic drummer, found out that we were making a replica of his Premier drum kit, he arranged a meet up to sign the Bootleg’s bass drum skin. ‘During the 2010 Blondie tour of the UK we took Clem out for a trip around London in our tour bus, he signed that too!!!!’In 2014 Clem invited Debbie and Andy to a recording session at the Foo Fighters’ famous 606 Studio in Los Angeles, where they saw Clem and the awesome Neve mixing desk in action!Debbie and Andy got married in March 2016 and to their great delight received two video clips from both Blondie and Debbie Harry herself congratulating them on their wedding day. What a wedding present! And probably the best Xmas present in the world ever was in 2016 when Clem Burke came along to a Bootleg Blondie gig and actually got up and played drums on stage with the band! He said afterwards that watching and playing with Bootleg Blondie was very emotional. Well Bootleg Blondie were very touched by Clem’s presence!!!Debbie Harris, lead vocalist of Bootleg Blondie, has the looks, the voice and the attitude of the original Blondie bombshell and like her heroine is typically outrageous on stage. She has been known to wear dustbin liners, thigh length boots and t.shirts with more holes than t.shirt!  Debbie's pride & joy is her guitar which she plays at every show and is signed by all the Blondie band members.Debbie Harris is the niece of the celebrated singer and actress Shani Wallis who played Nancy in Lionel Bart’s musical film 'Oliver'!                     ‘Good luck with your show!’ DEBBIE HARRY 'Playing with Bootleg Blondie was very emotional' CLEM BURKE ‘Thank you for your support’ CHRIS STEIN 'Hey Debbie and Andy congratulations, rock the house!'
