Watford Colosseum
Watford Colosseum is a 1,309 seat venue in the heart of Watford and is home to the best live music and entertainment outside London. Watford Colosseum was built in 1938 as the Watford Town Hall Assembly Rooms to the design of architect Charles Cowles-Voysey and acoustician Hope Bagenal. Bagenal’s other acoustic projects include the refurbishment of the Royal Albert Hall and the construction of the Royal Festival Hall.

Watford’s premier concert venue is world renowned for its acoustic qualities. Julian Lloyd Webber described Watford Colosseum as “the finest recording venue in the world” and it has been used to record the soundtracks of Lord of the Rings, The Sound of Music and Star Wars. In 1995, Pavarotti came to Watford Colosseum to record Verdi’s Inno delle Nazioni with the Philharmonia Chorus. More recently, recordings from BBC Concert Orchestra have taken place in the auditorium.

  • Wed 27 Jun - Watford Philharmonic Society

    7:30 PM

Featuring the choir from Watford Grammar School For Girls. A summer concert of contrasts! Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana has been described as the most frequently performed choral work of the 21st century. The songs (Carmina) are based on a collection of 13th Century songs and poems written in a mixture of Latin, German and Medieval French celebrating life, love, nature and the joys of the tavern. Morten Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium has at its heart the Christmas story and is a choral work of ethereal harmonies and great beauty. Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings is a song cycle with settings of six poems by British poets on the subject of night framed by a prologue and epilogue for horn only. The Watford Grammar School for Girls Choir will be joining soloists, Alec Franck-Gemmil, Anastasiia Golovin, Matthew Pochin and Mike Dewis on stage with the Watford Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra, all under the very capable baton of Michael Cayton.   Pre-Show Dining Reserve a table in the Forum Restaurant for pre-show dining before Watford Philharmonic Society and enjoy high-quality modern cuisine and exceptional service.
