What's on at the Horn

  • Fri 23 Oct - Spliced

    7:00 PM

Tonight dj Hansi will be spinning the best of Funk, Soul & Disco edits and remixes including some personal unreleased gems and a whole bunch of other super Funky Grooves, for your audio pleasure. St Albans based dj Hansi has had over 700,000 Soundcloud plays, he’s also topped both the Bandcamp & Juno Download Funk charts. His tunes have been played on Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show on BBC 6 and he ran St Albans longest running dj night The Monday Club for 10 years. He has dj’d alongside some of the biggest contemporary UK Funk & Acid Jazz bands on the circuit such as James Taylor Quartet, Mother Earth, Big Boss Man, New Master Sounds, Speedometer, Osibisa to name a few. Edits started appearing back in 1970’s New York disco scene, where dj’s picked their favourite grooves from a track and doubling them up, keeping the “groove” going for longer and taking out the bits they didn’t like or were not as danceable. They used to carefully “Splice” (hence the name of the event) the 1/4” tape together and make “Edits” purely for the dancefloor. With the dawn of digital audio software, this is now a function that is a lot more accessible, not needing expensive hardware and reels and reels of tape, bits of chalk and a scalpel. Soundcloud started in 2007, providing the perfect platform for budding editors, remixers and mash-up artists and the scene explodes yet once again. DJ’s dusting off old funk, soul & disco grooves, picking the creamy bits and giving them a fresh lick of contemporary loveliness. DJ Hansi’s full discography is available for a short time at a 75% discount on Viking Grooves (dj Hansi’s label) on Bandcamp. Music will be played up to a loudness of 85 Decibels due to safety guidelines. This will be a seated event with table service adhering to government regulations. Last Service Orders at 9.30pm. Advance booking of tables for this evening are highly advised - please email [email protected] Find out more...

  • Fri 20 Nov - Mark Morriss (The Bluetones) - Socially Distanced Show

    7:00 PM

MARK MORRISS(https://www.facebook.com/markmorrissofficial)(https://www.facebook.com/thebluetones)Mark Morriss is a singer songwriter who famously made his name fronting English indie outfit The Bluetones. Mark fronted the four piece over a successful and fruitful 15 year period, scoring 14 top ten singles and 3 top ten albums, whilst touring the UK, Europe and Japan. At the back end of 2011 the decision was made to disband The Bluetones, resulting in a shock farewell tour. Hordes of loyal Bluetones fans turned out in their thousands to give the band they called their own, a fond and sad farewell.  A case of unfinished business, Mark Morriss has now turned his attentions to his solo career. After releasing 'Memory Muscle ' in 2008, Mark has since penned material for a new record. Due for an Autumn release, early demos recorded with long standing Producer, Gordon Mills (Ed Sheeran/Newton Faulkner) have sparked great excitement from fans and industry a-like. Fans have been treated to a two track giveaway in 'Low Company' & 'Guilty Again' through the official website www.markmorriss.me Please note, this show is limited capacity and will follow current government guidelines. EMMA MCGRATH Emma McGrath is a singer-songwriter heralding from Harpenden. Writing her own material since 2013 she self-released her first EP, The Judgement, in November 2014. This was followed up in December 2015 with the self-released single ‘Sit With Me’, which caught the attention of key media including BBC Introducing who awarded it Track Of The Week twice and Radio 2 where it received plays from both Dermot O’Leary and Bob Harris. Topping off a great 2015, Emma was awarded The PRS Foundation's Lynsey de Paul prize. The following 18 months saw Emma build up a close network of writers who helped to develop her craft and hone her sound. Recognising this, in May 2017, The PRS Foundation awarded Emma a 'Women Make Music' grant for the development and subsequent release of a mini album. Recorded with several highly qualified and exciting producers, including Grammy Award winner Jimmy Hogarth and Brit School alumni Jackson, the first single 'Love You Better’ was self-released via AWAL on February 3rd and is garnering the attention of the public and record industry alike. • Sat 12 Dec - Nigel Clark (Dodgy) - Socially Distanced Show

    7:00 PM

NIGEL CLARKhttps://www.facebook.com/nigelrichardclark/https://www.facebook.com/dodgyuk Nigel Clark singer songwriter and singer with 90's band Dodgy. The first time round, Dodgy were only together for seven years but in that time they sold over a million records worldwide, released three albums and enjoyed 12 Top 40 singles, including Staying Out For The Summer, In A Room, If You’re Thinking Of Me and the massive hit Good Enough - officially one of the most played tracks on British radio in the last 20 years. Dodgy’s 2012 comeback album Stand Upright In A Cool Place, was a long time coming, 15 years to be precise since the double platinum selling ‘Free Peace Sweet’. From the rave reviews and many media plaudits that were heaped upon 'Stand Upright….' it seemed that the original line up of the band had done the impossible - to reform and make a contemporary and relevant album that surpassed their previous work. Creating a sound with “golden harmonies and echoes of CSN&Y and Fleet Foxes”, and prompting The Word magazine to say "They’ve just made the record of their career by a country mile", The Guardian described the album as a "revelation" whilst it went on to get 4**** reviews in Mojo, Uncut, Q, The Times, The Mirror and The Express. Please note, this show is limited capacity and will follow current government guidelines. 8:00 PM

Porridge Radio *** MERCURY PRIZE 2020 NOMINEE *** Beginning as Dana Margolin’s sadcore bedroom project, Porridge Radio developed into an idiosyncratic post-punk 4-piece after she moved to Brighton and met her future bandmates. They inelegantly knot together Margolin's vicious, furious emotional outpourings with beautiful pop melodies, and have shared stages with the likes of Soccer Mommy, Alex G, Cherry Glazerr, Goat Girl, Dream Wife and Lydia Lunch. After a series of demos, and the growing legend of their intense live shows, full-band LP 'Rice, Pasta and Other Fillers' came out via Memorials of Distinction in 2016. Recorded in a garden shed, their lofi debut documents struggles with life, love and boredom, and showcases the scrapbook absurdism at Porridge Radio's core. In early 2019 Porridge Radio made an eagerly anticipated return with their first studio-recordings, the singles ‘Give / Take’ and ‘Don’t Ask Me Twice’. The two tracks offer the first glimpse of an increasingly refined sound, whilst maintaining the earnest vitality of their earlier work. The band's Secretly Canadian debut, Every Bad, is a culmination of what has been in their head for some time; the record they have been waiting for the means to record. The record is due 13 March 2020, & arrives full of grand, sweeping ambition – with vocals so urgent that it often feels like it is moved by compulsion rather than choice, with all the rawness of early Karen O, and influences as disparate as Charli XCX and The Cranberries.Tickets - £9 Adv / £11 DoorAges 14+ (Under 18s accompanied by parent/guardian) Find out more...

AVALANCHE PARTY “The most exciting rock & roll band in the UK right now” BBC Radio 1 “A tsunami of mega riffs and eardrum-popping bass lines. Definitely don’t want to wear your Sunday best to one of their raucous gigs” NME Avalanche Party is feral garage-punk rock & roll from the North Yorkshire Moors. Their sound is intense and immediate, so new yet so familiar, brimming with an urgency that explodes off the stage like the front lines of a war you didn’t even realise was being fought. Every note played through white knuckles, every word spat through gritted teeth. The past few years have seen Avalanche Party tear away from the moors, greeting the UK, Europe and USA with intense live performances. Hotly tipped by many for big industry success, the band has had heavy radio support, being championed by BBC Introducing, Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson, Vic Galloway at BBC Scotland, John Kennedy at Radio X, Edith Bowman at Virgin Radio, Jim Gellatly at Amazing Radio and KEXP’s Kevin Cole & KCRW’s Jason Kramer in the USA. The band have recorded two live sessions for BBC 6Music, and were invited to London by KEXP to perform a live session as part of International Clash Day. They were also named by NME as a part of their global Top 100 Bands for 2019. The band has toured the UK & Europe constantly with numerous sell out shows, festival appearances and they’ve just returned from their first trip to the United States and Mexico, including performances at SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, New Colossus Festival in New York & headline shows in Los Angeles, California and Tijuana, Mexico. • Wed 17 Mar - Hayseed Dixie

    8:00 PM

Hayseed DixieHayseed Dixie was formed in the summer of 2000 on the front porch of a cabin in the Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee, when after drinking enough whiskey to float a battleship across the Sahara Desert, it became suddenly obvious to the boys that the "Lost Highway" of Hank Williams and the "Highway To Hell" of AC/DC were the same damned road. The rest of the world first got a taste of the boys on April 17, 2001 with the release of their first album, titled "A Hillbilly Tribute To AC/DC".The band has since gone on to record 13 further albums containing both original songs and reinterpretations of previously known works, albeit in their own inimitable style. Having sold over half a million albums worldwide and having played more than 1,000 live shows on every continent except Antarctica, Hayseed Dixie are acknowledged as the creators of the musical genre "Rockgrass."TICKETS: £18.50 AdvanceAges 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian)Tickets may be available on the door but we strongly advise you purchase them in advance to avoid disappointment Find out more...
