When I think of food and Marks and Spencer one word springs to mind – quality. So proper table service from M and S has a lot of expectation riding on it and I have to say it doesn’t disappoint…
First impressions of our visit to the new restaurant at the London Colney retail metropolis were all positive. We were shown to our table by polite, smiling staff. We marvelled at the clean lines and décor of the main dining room. We were even impressed with the simplicity and diversity of the reasonably priced menu.
The food followed quickly despite it being a busy Saturday afternoon and it was just as we hoped it would be: The salmon nicoise salad was delicious without being too greasy and the aberdeen angus burger and chips looked and tasted like something straight out of an ad. Not so well received was the chicken caesar salad – tasty ingredients but jumbo crutons – not a problem if you’ve got a large gob, but my wife hasn’t! Kids were well catered for with a reasonably priced menu just for them (high chairs are also available).
The only (tiny) annoyance was the stream of shoppers wandering past us (we were seated near the entrance) looking for a table and not expecting table service - and if you’re in hurry and after a quick coffee maybe this isn’t the place for you. Minor grumbles aside M and S have really hit the spot with this new style restaurant and as word spreads I imagine it will be harder and harder to get a table even if you could book. Well worth braving the car park for a visit for lunch or high tea (with cakes on doily stands) even if you’re not in the mood for shopping. [Oct 08]
