I love eating at Loch Fyne, St Albans. I've taken business colleagues, friends and even family members who are international fishery experts ... and I'm rarely disappointed. Recently, I discovered they had a Loyalty Card scheme which, had I known about it before, could've saved me a small fortune. I always opt for the set menu, which isn't immediately obvious, and go for three courses at around £13.95 - a real bargain, especially when accompanied by a small additional charge for a glass of chilled Sicilian white wine, smooth and lemony. Having worked my way through the entire menu, I can rave about their Cullen Skink and the Thai Fish Cakes ... and I love their Cornish Dab even though you need to be good to get it off the bones. The only anguish is whether to opt for their French Fries or their double English chunky chips - which is it to be? And finally, when truly stuffed, should I go for the yummy puddings or try to be virtuous and stick to a fruit sorbet ice? A bit too late for that, methinks. Great food, great service, in a truly original venue. 01 Mar 14
