Review Overview

New manager required? - review by 17awhile
Visited fairly early on a non-descript Sunday evening, the week before Whitsun bank holiday. Third time we've walked in without a reservation and second time we've been turned away due to the restaurant being 'full'. Except there were any number of empty tables throughout the restaurant! The problem here is staffing or lack thereof, as confirmed by the greeter. They only have a set number of staff on who are able to cater for a certain amount of guests, despite many tables going a-begging. Apparently this also applies to the ordering of food as on this particular night, we were told they had a 'very limited menu' due to being busy the day before. So you don't have enough staff on to serve us or enough food to feed us? We thank you for your honesty but we'll be on our way then ... [May 13] 28 May 13

Don't get too excited.... - review by f3011
Great fit out and no expense spared. Waiter very knowledgable. Food not up to scratch. Snails ok. Hard to mess them up. Sausages Toulouse a bit overcooked. My daughters lamb bland. A bit like the whole experience. Not what I expect from the price, the reputation or new new restaurant. I'd recommend to an 18 year old trying to impress his girlfriend on first date and leave it at that. Especially if she likes chocolate crumble for dessert. [Sep 12] 09 Sep 12

bon vivants chez M. Blanc - review by rnk
No expense appears to have been spared in the fitting up of this new restaurant. By the look of it, Raymond Blanc is planning on being here to stay. We had a good meal. My main course of sea bream on squid bouillabaisse was particularly excellent, as was the chocolate crumble dessert. Service was efficient and friendly, and the bill while on the higher side certainly wasn't astronomical. Only downside was that we felt a tad hemmed in at our table. But another good restaurant in St Albans! We could be bons viveurs every day of the week if only our wallets and our waistlines could afford it... [Aug 12] 30 Aug 12

Brasserie Bland - review by poodey
Let's start with the positives. The place looks great. It's huge and has been very nicely done. And it's pretty decent value; a two course 'lunch' (available 'til 7pm) for £11 something. But that's about all there is to report. It's completely underwhelming. Nothing leaps off the menu and grabs you. The food itself is distinctly average. Staff are rather lackidasical; lots of standing around chatting while food sits under hot lamps on the pass with the chefs calling for service. One waitress picked up a dish, wandered off with it, came back, and asked me 'Is this for you?'. I don't know love, that's your job. Both the kitchen and the service staff were completely flustered by a large table's order; while they flapped and muddled over who had ordered what, plates of very expensive chateaubriand (at £52 a pop!) sat under heat lamps for over 5 minutes. Pity whoever ordered theirs rare... I am sure people will go, just because of the name. But it's just another middle of the road brasserie. A market which is already rather well cornered by Cafe Rouge or Cote. [Aug 12] 26 Aug 12
