Review Overview

One of St Albans' hidden gastronomic treasures... - review by alvore7
If I have one complaint about this place it is that it doesn't promote itself enough! My wife and I have been here a number of times and - without fail - the service and the food has been excellent; the menu is mainly classic European fare - with an emphasis on French. However, it is a shame that whenever we go it never seems to be busy: 3 or 4 other tables occupied at the most. With the right promotion this place could rival Dacry's - or even St Michaels Manor - as a great local place to visit for a fine meal in lovely traditional surroundings... [Oct 11] 04 Oct 11

No frills, no fuss and good value - review by loki

In the title of this review I wanted to say the Ryanair of St.Albans dining but I thought that some people may get the wrong idea. I've only discovered the Albany relatively recently and only eaten there once. The service was OK, the food was OK the decor was OK and we were in and out within less than 90 minutes for 3 courses and wine. However at the price we paid it was very good value. There are restaurants that have better food, better decor and more attentive staff but they come at a much more hefty price. For me the Albany is a great place to go to get a quick meal in a restaurant setting at good value. If you want the Singapore airlines experience then go to London or one of St. Albans' more expensive establishments. I'd like to give the Albany 3.5 stars but the value isn't quiet enough to make it to 4. Good for an inexpensive, good value meal. [May 11]

Awful place - review by jinty
We were shown to our table right next to the men's loo and there was an overwhelming smell of urine. We asked to be moved and were put next to the bar which smelt of damp and then I noticed that there was a thick layer of dust on the bar and when I wiped it with my finger it showed how very dusty it was. It has NO atmosphere at all and at this stage we left not having dared taste the food! [Feb 11]

Great food but no atmosphere! - review by smallone
We went to the Albany for my husband's 40th birthday and although the food was delicious we left feeling a little flat. There were only a few tables the evening we went so it was quiet but we just found the restaurant devoid of any atmosphere. The waitress was polite and friendly but we felt she could have checked if we were ok a bit more - especially as they weren't exactly run off their feet!.... a few times we had to wait for her as she seemed to have disappeared. My husband would like to go back again as he really had no complaints about the food and felt it was good value for money. I would rather pay a bit more and go to Darcys. [Nov 10]

Superb - review by south-sider

We took a group of friends to The Albany in December and had the best pre-Christmas meal we've ever had. Although the restaurant was full, and on its second sitting of the evening, the quality of the food and service never faltered. This was a first for us! The staff were friendly and helpful, the communication (about timings of subsequent courses) was excellent and the food was outstanding. We had a fabulous evening and would recommend The Albany to anyone. It's so much more enjoyable to eat here than at a generic chain restaurant! [Jan 2010]

Great food, reasonable price - review by sopur

Great food, reasonable price - the two rarely go together these days it seems! But The Albany definitely ticked those two boxes! It's a beautiful building which lends to a warm and relaxing atmosphere. Service was friendly and efficient - and not once did anyone come by during a course asking, 'Is everything alright for you?' - it's a pet peeve! I was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food. My friend and I shared a starter (chicken, ham hock, and foie gras terrine - this was totally yummy), we had the halibut and salmon for main (perfectly cooked) and shared a dessert (super super scrumptious chococale fondant!). Will definitely return! [Nov 09]

Great food, lovely evening - review by bwbw

We had heard a lot about this restaurant when my husband and I finally managed to go and try it. We weren't disappointed. The food was excellent, the service quick but unobtrusive. We will go again and take friends next time. [Nov 09]

Wonderful food, service and ambience - review by thefsg

We've eaten at the Albany three times now and it has consistently delivered excellent tasty food backed up with attentive and friendly service. My friend chose 2 courses whereas I went for 3. The Crab Mayonnaise with Avocado was a success with a mouthwatering combination of flavours, and the Rump Steak perfectly cooked. The chips were clearly the sort that had been double- or even triple-fried and were unbelievably tasty. For the quality and ambience of the restaurant, the superb food, a good and reasonably priced wine list, and excellent service it is a real gem in George Street. All in all, a lovely restaurant that delivers excellent quality at a reasonable price. [Jul 09]

excellent food and service - review by localgirl

We were invited to a birthday meal here and we had a great time. Although the group was large, we all had very good food and fast service. If they can cope with a large group so well, that is a good sign. Our fish was cooked perfectly and the desserts fab. Pretty location on George Street, so a good place for a special occasion. Homely but in a good way - review by rnk

We really enjoyed our meal at the Albany. Service was good, and the restaurant, a converted old pub, has a good atmosphere - intimate and homely without feeling claustrophobic. Food highlights included the sea bass and ice cream sorbet, though these were separate dishes, naturally. Recommended. [Oct 08]
