  • Wed 16 Oct - Social Contract / Sourdough / Kick Pistol

    8:00 PM

Social Contract South London band Social Contract return with new politically driven single 'Common Tongue', the title track from their upcoming debut EP set to release this spring via Beatnik Creative. 'Common Tongue' is the story a "new build" community turned sour over the decades. It is a raw and spell-binding tale of the post-war new towns movement in England and how the years left those cities to fend for themselves as government funding was cut down. Telford born lead singer Josh Eggerton, recounts his own experience as a witness to this decay: "In the spring of 2016 I travelled back home to the West Midlands to visit family. During my time there I saw first hand how much of an effect the Brexit campaign had in the surrounding areas on all classes, and how the Leave movement had allowed racist slurs back into society. I overheard a group of people talking in a pub about growing up in their town (a new build) blaming minorities for the downfall of their town". "Is it a common interest or is it the common tongue?" literally translates "do you share the same interests with the person sat next to you, or are you just agreeing with them because you share the same language, skin colour and culture." Alongside 'Common Tongue', the band also releases a music video for the single, starring Matt Arnold, directed by Social Contract's Josh Eggerton and edited by Ruby Brown at MCBANE. Social Contract was initially founded online by Josh and Scott Roach (guitarist) while Josh was looking for housing in London. Bonding over their mutual love of music they began writing music that reflected the environment they lived and later quenching a ferocious thirst for playing live, they decided to recruit fellow musicians Bisque Wemyss (Drums) and Chris Coward (Bass). Their incredible live sets on the New Cross scene quickly gained them an underground reputation, securing them slots supporting JAWS at Scala, and later being asked to join them on their November tour in 2017. Previous releases 'Citizen' and 'Six Pips' followed, which gathered high praise and comparisons to Future Islands and Bombay Bicycle Club. Recently signed to indie record label Beatnik Creative, the South London quartet is now getting ready to release their upcoming EP 'Common Tongue' later this Spring, sure to cement their position as one of the most exciting alternative bands around right now. • Tue 22 Oct - Press To MECO / Chapter & Verse / Thousand Thoughts

    8:00 PM

Press to MECO“Everyone feels emotions.” Sometimes the simplest phrases are the most powerful. Certainly, it’s the choice of words Crawley trio Press to MECO arrive at when discussing their current album, ‘Here’s to The Fatigue’.“It’s easy to get annoyed and frustrated at life sometimes, or the state of the world in general,” says drummer and lyricist Lewis Williams. “But we want to write about these things from a human, emotional point of view, because those feelings are universal – everyone can relate to them.”Press to MECO have grown with this album, not by taking huge, mile-long strides into the unknown, but by getting “much, much better at what we can do,” according to Luke. But it’s in what’s behind the music that adds the real spark.Lewis recalls working on the lyrics during a time when he describes himself as feeling “sort of lost. I’d reached a point, as many people do, where you’re looking around at your life and wondering what’s next. There’s loads of really crazy things going on in the world right now as well. With all of that mixed together, it all fed into the lyrics.”This isn’t to say Press to MECO are mired in misery. Quite the opposite. In fact, that’s the point behind the whole thing, write large in the album’s title: ‘Oh well, let’s keep going.’“That’s exactly it!” grins Luke. “It’s almost like saying, ‘Well, life can be hard sometimes, the world can be a tough place, but we’re still here – cheers!’”Having signed to Marshall Records and Publishing in January 2018, the band have continued on an upward trajectory and toured with the likes of SikTh, Arcane Roots, Don Broco and ended 2018 with a full European/Russia tour with Shinedown.Chapter and VerseThousand ThoughtsTICKETS: £8 Adv / £10 DoorAges 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian) Find out more...

She drew the gunShe Drew The Gun make impassioned, hypnotic and darkly ornate psych-pop built around the lyrically evocative songwriting of singer-guitarist Louisa Roach. Under the moniker She Drew The Gun, the Wirral native started playing solo gigs with a handful of songs in 2014. Meeting James Skelly of The Coral in 2015, Louisa began recording with Skelly at Skeleton Key Records and recruiting band members along the way. After touring Europe with Fink in 2015 Louisa emerged in 2016 with debut record Memories of the Future and a fully formed band. That year the group saw off 5,000 competitors to win Glastonbury's emerging talent contest, made their first TV performance on Soccer Am and supported The Coral on a UK tour. After adding new songs and reissuing their debut album as Memories of Another Future in 2017 they continued to tour, performing at SXSW and across a string of UK festivals including main stage performances at Glastonbury, Deer Shed, Cambridge Folk Festival and On Blackheath amongst others. In 2018 the band have continued to tour as well as recording a new album with Skeleton Key Records due for release this year. They continue to win over fans with their lyrically evocative style coupled with meticulously layered songs and have been taking their message outside the UK playing gigs in numerous European capitals. "Junkyard Scouse soul.. built ingeniously on a Wirral council budget” ★★★★ UncutBugeye TICKETS: £12 Adv - SOLD OUTAges 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian) Find out more...

Most unexpectedly, Popular Music even ended up in BBC Radio 1 Albums Of The Year list, where Life’s gnarly, Humberside riffs and scattergun wordplay kept unlikely – but deserved - company with the likes of Jay-Z, Skepta, the xx and Wolf Alice. • Thu 28 Nov - Avalanche Party

    8:00 PM

AVALANCHE PARTY “The most exciting rock & roll band in the UK right now” BBC Radio 1 “A tsunami of mega riffs and eardrum-popping bass lines. Definitely don’t want to wear your Sunday best to one of their raucous gigs” NME Avalanche Party is feral garage-punk rock & roll from the North Yorkshire Moors. Their sound is intense and immediate, so new yet so familiar, brimming with an urgency that explodes off the stage like the front lines of a war you didn’t even realise was being fought. Every note played through white knuckles, every word spat through gritted teeth. The past few years have seen Avalanche Party tear away from the moors, greeting the UK, Europe and USA with intense live performances. Hotly tipped by many for big industry success, the band has had heavy radio support, being championed by BBC Introducing, Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson, Vic Galloway at BBC Scotland, John Kennedy at Radio X, Edith Bowman at Virgin Radio, Jim Gellatly at Amazing Radio and KEXP’s Kevin Cole & KCRW’s Jason Kramer in the USA. The band have recorded two live sessions for BBC 6Music, and were invited to London by KEXP to perform a live session as part of International Clash Day. They were also named by NME as a part of their global Top 100 Bands for 2019. The band has toured the UK & Europe constantly with numerous sell out shows, festival appearances and they’ve just returned from their first trip to the United States and Mexico, including performances at SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, New Colossus Festival in New York & headline shows in Los Angeles, California and Tijuana, Mexico. Band onstage at 10:30 - Free Entry The Maida Vales avoid the usual suspect sounds we've heard time and time again. Instead, the band favor the more eccentric tones and feel good numbers of the early Stones, Kinks and the more recent, Dandy Warhol's, Supergrass and The Raconteurs. The bands keen ear for melody, hooks and groove make for a stand out, whistle blowing, fuzz-rock sound. Exploration into the tremendous highs and the bottomless lows of a middle class music nut living in the heart of the concrete jungle. Love and loss, excess and debauchery together with BIG melodies, raucous riffs, driving bass lines and powerhouse blues beats paired with stage antics to match! https://www.themaidavales.com/ Find out more...

Beth RowleyThey say it’s good to take your time with things that are important to you, and certainly no one can accuse Beth Rowley of rushing the process of recording her much anticipated second album. Following a storming introduction in 2008, with her UK top 10 album Little Dreamer selling over 100,000 albums and receiving a Brit Award nomination for Best Female Solo Artst, Beth has spent the last 6 years experimenting and perfecting her sound and is finally back with a new album titled GOTA FRÍA, released in 2018. Beth still acknowledges early influences from Gospel Spirituals, Soul and Blues inherited from her parents, who brought her up on Led Belly, Mahalia Jackson. Her new sound has grown edgier, deeper and louder with more than hints of 70’s electric guitar, gritty harmonica and Americana influenced pedal steel. Beth recently sold out a UK headline tour, including The Jazz Café and the Royal Albert Hall, in support of Jools Holland. Beth’s vocals are simply stunning, fragile yet powerful and need to be heard live to be fully appreciated. Whether she graces the stage either with her 4-piece band or a stripped back duo, it is clear to see that the years preparing have grown in her a confidence that only experience and commitment to your art can give. Beth has appeared on stage with some giants of the music world including recent tour support for Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra during his UK tour, Burt Bacharach – BBC Electric Proms alongside Adele & Jamie Cullum, David Arnold, and as Angelo Badalamenti’s personal guest with Susie Sioux (David Lynch’s right hand man) at Ghent film festival. Beth has performed at Willie Nelson’s 4th July Back Yard Festival in Austin alongside Ray Wylie Hubbard and has shared performances with Katie Melua, Carleen Anderson and the BBC Concert Orchestra. When Beth isn’t performing her own music she tours as guest vocalist with Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra.TICKETS: £12.50 Adv / £15 Door Ages 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian) Find out more...

  • Wed 11 Dec - Johnny Lloyd

    8:00 PM

Johnny LloydJohnny Lloyd has come a long way since 2014 when, after two top 40 albums, world tours and support slots with Pixies and The Rolling Stones, Johnny disbanded the critically and commercially beloved Tribes and struck out on his own. Taking the hazy pop sound he’d spearheaded with is bandmates, Johnny spent little time taking it into darker, rougher territory. He founded a new musical home and friendships with Jamie T, Mike Crossey (Producer of The 1975, Hozier) and Hugo White (The Maccabees), who helped guide the recording of his first two solo EPs - 'Dreamland' and 'Eden'. The past year or so has seen Johnny extend his songwriting abilities from his own songs to producing music for television and film with over 1,000 uses of Johnny’s music on TV in 2017 alone as well as writing the score for his first full-length feature film, Rare Beasts, in 2018. However the time came for Johnny to pen more personal songs and set about writing his debut album. Recorded in North London with producer Nathan Coen, the album is raw and personal. For the finishing touches Johnny called in talented mates Frank Turner, Hugo White (The Maccabees) and Adam Prendergast of Harry Styles’s band. With the album set for release in early May 2019, and tours being booked for the UK, Europe and further afield, Johnny Lloyd is back with a renewed sense of direction, a sure and steadfast attitude that is echoed throughout the album.TICKETS: £8.50 Adv / £11 DoorAges 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian)Tickets may be available on the door but we strongly advise you purchase them in advance to avoid disappointment Find out more...

  • Thu 30 Jan - Egyptian Blue / Sinead O’Brien

    8:00 PM

Egyptian BlueEvery element of Egyptian Blue’s fierce, uncompromising sound feels like hypnotism fuelled by psychosis. Their grinding riffs achieve a mesmeric power through brute repetition, while their rhythm section produces taut, nervous energy and intense post-punk grooves in equal measure. If you discovered them through their recent track ‘To Be Felt’, which was supported by Huw Stephens, Jack Saunders, Steve Lamacq, John Kennedy and Tom Ravenscroft, you’ll connect with the dark mania that pulsates throughout their debut EP ‘Collateral Damage’. It’s under a new deal with Yala! Records, the label co-founded by former Maccabee Felix White and home to the likes of The Magic Gang and Willie J Healey.SINEAD O'BRIENSINEAD O' BRIEN is an Irish poet and performer based in London. Originally from Limerick 'a kind of grey industrial place with an a certain poetry to it', Sinead's work captures the everyday and the in-between in a way that transcends genre. Her influences can be found in the realism of Mark E. Smith of The Fall and the works of literary icons such Frank O’Hara, W.B. Yeats, Joan Didion, Albert Camus. Her latest release 'A Thing You Call Joy' via Chess Club Records "channels her poetry into a performance-art-rock masterpiece” (The Line Of Best Fit). This follows O’Brien’s first music of 2019 ‘Taking On Time', the landmark 30th single release on Dan Carey's Speedy Wunderground label. A mesmerising call-to-arms, 'Taking On Time' is equal parts Mark E and Patti Smith – set against a taut, frenetic bed recalling post-punk underdogs Life Without Buildings and The Slits but with a krautrock groove that is classic Speedy Wunderground. A multifaceted artist, O’Brien’s writing has also been published by the esteemed London Magazine whose alumni include T.S. Eliot, Sylvia Plath and William Burroughs. This unique fusion of spoken lyrics and art rock has piqued the attention of luminaries of both genres, seeing her perform with John Cooper Clarke and Brian Jonestown Massacre at sold out theatres across the UK. Playing live with her band and collaborators; Julian Hanson (guitar) and Oscar Robertson (drums), Sinead’s transfixing performances are placing her at the forefront of a resurgent post-punk wave that is taking the capital and beyond.TICKETS: £9 Adv / £11 Door Ages 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian) Find out more...
