It's a year since the Blacksmith's Arms had a facelift and new staff. And in that time it's changed from a pub we'd scuttle past to a firm favourite. Why? Well, first up, the staff are excellent. Absoloutely excellent. Polite, friendly, efficient - nothing is ever too much trouble. Then there are the beers. An ever changing selection of guest ales and beers means there's always something for the real ale fans (you're always invited to try before you buy, which is handy) - and their brilliant loyalty scheme means every 7th pint you buy is on the house. There's a decent menu of simple pub fare which isn't going to win a Michelin star, but is good value for money. The clientete has changed too; weekends are still pretty full on (with live music every Sat night) but weekday evenings draw a mixed crowd with a relaxed atmosphere. Certainly not all football fans and old men, as it was a few years back. With what must be the best garden of any town centre pub, the Blacksmith's has worked very hard to up its game. Fair play to them and well done! [May 10]
