Dog friendly cafe - review by heatherbelle

I have to agree with south-sider on their review. This place has such huge potential but it's completely wasted. They have good coffee, and everything to suggest you'd be welcome to stay all afternoon - a whole host of free newspapers to read and comfy chairs. But they ruin it all by putting a stupid huge TV screen, which destroys any kind of atmosphere they might create. We took our puppy there and for doggy people, there's seating inside the foyer or outside. Sadly it lacked any kind of atmosphere inside and out, was empty and the woman behind the counter looked fed up, probably because there was absolutely nothing to eat in the display cabinet (and that was at 11.30am!!).

I ordered a sandwhich (3-cheese and onion) and it was quite disgusting on cheap pappy white chemical bread, I left most of it. Why on earth don't they get creative with their food, and their huge cafe, which needs something like a regular flea/craft market, like we have in the Town Hall. At the moment it's just not worth going back to, and I suspect it won't last because it's always empty, lacklustre and has inedible food. Sorry U4 Coffee, but you need to know. Do something about it, and while you're at it, change the name, it's dumb! [Apr 09]

Handy for passing motorists - review by south-sider

As its name suggests, U4 coffee is useful for the passing motorist stuck in traffic on the A414. U4’s tag line is ‘It’s all in the bean’. We thought the Illy coffee lived up to this claim and was cheaper than Starbucks. When we visited (mid-afternoon on a Sunday) there were disappointingly few fresh sweet treats engulfed by a large display case. We settled for two good cookies from the Byron Bay range.

A perspex case of newspapers (Mail and Times) suggested that we might want to stay and relax but we didn’t feel like settling in for the afternoon. U4 is light, clean, spacious and full of chrome furniture and faux Le Corbusier sofas. Unfortunately, it’s also sterile, characterless and lacking any kind of atmosphere. Even the large plasma screen showing Sky News contradicts the peaceful calm of the aquarium underneath.

With good coffee and a range of cold drinks and pre-packed snacks, this is a useful place to pull over for some good quality takeaway coffee but not our first choice for a café to relax in. [Oct 08]
