Reviews for The Secret Garden Cafe

Must try - lovely food and great service!

After living in St Albans for a few years, I came across this with some visitors earlier this year and love it! Milkshakes and smoothies are wonderful and various food (from soup to sarnies) has always been great too. Definitely give it a go - the staff and lovely too! [Nov 11]

Fab food

Hubby and I only just tried out the Secret Garden Cafe the other day with some visiting relatives. Great food, like the choices of teas and good service. Nice atmosphere. [Nov 11]

A new favourite!

I only recently discovered this little cafe, and its fab! I have taken both my young children here and it's been very friendly. Its reasonably priced with lovely food, I have yet to try to hot dishes but they look good. The owner is very friendly and it has a nice vibe to it (altho this is lacking slightly upstairs). I am looking forward to trying it outside when the weather improves! [Mar 11]

Shhh...it's a secret!

A perfect gem in St. Albans. But shhh...it's a secret! This little coffee shop will not disappoint. From coffees to sandwiches, it's absolutely perfect. [Jan 11]

A Little Gem

I wanted a quick and easy lunch to take my 2 1/2 year old to and thought I'd give the Secret Garden Cafe a go. Our waitress was so friendly she immediately made me feel at ease (not always easy with a toddler in tow!) We ordered beans on toast for my son and a brie, bacon andamp; cranberry panini for me. The toast was a delicious bloomer and my boy woofed the lot. Mine too was yummy. No frills but a real gem and the waitress was just lovely. I will definitely be back. [Dec 10]

The secret's out...

I read about this place on this website so decided to explore. I wasn't disappointed. This place is a little gem. The staff were friendly, the coffee was good and the out-door space is lovely. Inside, there is lovely artwork and prints of St Albans that you can buy. I will definitely be going back. It's child friendly, I took my three there and they loved it. [Aug 10]

best cafe in St Albans - ssshhhhh!

A lovely place, tucked away, this. We went right through to the even more secret garden at the back, and really enjoyed ourselves. Food was excellent - our coronation chicken sandwich, bacon sandwich (lovely bread too) and carrot cake were all fantastic, and the service was very friendly. We've now found our favourite cafe in St Albans, but don't tell everyone... Do up the garden at the back for the fifth star! [Jul 10]

The secret garden cafe shouldn't be a secret

I first 'discovered' the secret garden cafe as our friends were raving about it; since our first visit we have never been disappointed with the food or the service. During our most recent visit, my husband ate the moussaka and I had the hearty winter soup; our children tucked into the beans on toast on Redbournbury bread (delicious!) Everybody's meal was tasty and very good value. The staff consider the needs of children; we particularly challenged them when my 4yo ordered hot chocolate this weekend, but overcame this by giving her a small cup to use. During the summer it's delightful to sit outside; it's peaceful and away from the bustle of the marketplace. What my family and I love most about this cafe is that it still seems to be one of St Alban's best kept secrets. It's such a great cafe that it's hard to keep quiet about it. [May 10]

pretty location and nice cakes

We go to this cafe quite often as we like the outside space with our children and there is a lovely view of the Abbey which is quite unusual to find. The cakes are lovely and the food good value. On busier days the staff do seem a bit hassled and it seems quite tricky to look after all the different areas of the cafe, but the food and drinks make up for it. [Feb 10]

Promising first visit

We popped into this quiet cafe that no-one seems to know about (yet!) and really liked it. Great courtyard space, friendly service, good coffee (our benchmark) and Chegworth organic juices. The menu looked tempting too - breads from Redbournbury Mill, locally baked 'crumble tarts', yummy breakfasts and daily specials. We'll be back soon to try the food before everyone discovers this place! [Jun 09]
