A fantastic local pub...with great food too!!!

The Veralum pub came under new ownership just over a year ago, and has become the base for ‘The Foragers'. This is pub/restaurant 'concept', that offers an unusual menu of great, local food, in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. It has a wide-age range of customers and is family friendly. I live fairly local to the Veralum Arms (Foragers) and I have seen it grow into one of the best pubs in St Albans. I ate there recently and enjoyed a really good meal, and it was absolutely stunning in terms of flavour and originality. The menu is based on locally sourced ingredients (the pub has its own hunters!) and meals are prepared and cooked on the premises. I went for the parsnip soup (much better than it sounds), Chinese Water Deer pie (unbelievably succulent and tasty), and bread and butter pudding (no pub grub this – truly outstanding). It was all delicious, and the deer pie was certainly something I would go for again. (My only gripe is that I could have easily managed more B and B pudding - but hey, maybe I’m greedy). My friend Haley was delighted with the pan-seared Sea Bass, and being a Weymouth girl, she really does appreciate good sea food. Her partner Dan had the marinated pork ribs in dark ale and mustard butter and was very happy with his choice. The service was excellent and friendly, and the timing was perfect. I never felt either rushed, or impatient for the next course. All in all, the pub is cosy, warm and friendly, and the staff are relaxed and generally great. (And they keep beer in tip-top condition!). This place is an all-round winner, and I feel very fortunate to have such a great local on my doorstep, it what it offers is significantly different from all the competition. [Mar 12]

Gobsmackingly Good NIght!

Intrigued by the lure of Olde St Albans, we ventured out of the lovely city centre and stumbled across the Verulam Arms. We really enjoyed their thoughtful hospitality, locally sourced produce and well kept beer. We'll definitely be back! [Aug 11]

Too many items off

On a Saturday night, we were given menus, talked about what we were going to have, got ready to make our order only to be told that this item was off, this item there was only one serving left (fish of the day). In fact it would have been a blessing if the lamb kofta had been off, but that's another story. Friendly efficient staff did their best, but the food was overall disappointing, the pork ribs being the notable exception among a limited choice of main courses. Desserts not on the menu were offered, 3 of us tried to order the treacle tart, only one portion left! We hope this was a one-off disappointment and will try it again, and they should expand main courses to include alternatives to fish and red meat maybe. [Jul 11]

Heavenly Sausage Sandwich!

Well after a period of closure I was thrilled to see The Verulam Arms re-open. The fact that it is better than ever just makes it extra special. I have dined there several times in recent weeks, but my biggest surprise came when just popping in for a pint and a quick sandwich on Saturday afternoon. I tested out the guest ale, which was a Tring based real ale called the Jolly Ebeneezer! That was a pleasant surprise but even more so was the sausage sandwich, which was particularly impressive! I now make the Verulam Arms a regular haunt a couple of times a week and cannot recommend the place highly enough. Welcome Back! [Dec 10]
