Fab food and venue
Really lovely bar and restaurant. The setting was very modern and stylish. The staff were very attentive and the food was great. The only thing I would change would be to have a couple of lighter options on the menu and some prosecco on the wine list. Will be going again. [Feb 10]

Good service but food disappointing
Our experience was very similar to the reviewer below. When we visited the restaurant had a cosy ambience and the service was very good, but the food disappointed. Though well presented, several dishes lacked flavour. To start we had a brie and tomato vol au vent - the base and cheese were slightly warm with a cold tomato slice on top - which just didn't work as a dish. The roast lamb tasted good but was let down by overcooked and flavourless new potatoes. For vegetarians there was only one choice, a very average goat's cheese cannelloni. We didn't try deserts. If you are taking advantage of an offer, Savanna offers reasonable value for money, but otherwise the a la carte prices are too high for this level of cuisine. [Feb 10]

fab interior, lovely service, food varied
We were amazed at the transformation of the old pub that was here a couple of years ago to this funky modern interior. We had a warm welcome, and prompt service all night. Our onion soup was delicious. My lamb was overcooked but enjoyable. Our broccoli was very overcooked and at 3.50 was naughty for a very simple side dish. Desserts - creme brule and chocolate fondant were lovely. I think the price is a little high for the food which is good pub food really. If everything was 1-2 quid less a dish I would probably return but for this price there are good alternatives in St Albans. Fab location for a restaurant - such a pretty part of town by St Michaels village. The bar looked good too, so probably worth a visit there too. [Mar 09]

Hotel dining....
I ate here mid-week and was very impressed. You can enter the cosy restaurant from the bar or from the hotel entrance (via its own car park - a big plus). Although it was very quiet that evening the service was excellent and the food very good. French style but English portions! It is quite expensive but for a special treat I think worth it. [Nov 08]
