St Stephen's is an old parish church, founded in 948 AD. Little remains of the original Anglo Saxon building, but the small window, deep set in rough masonry, just by the door to the Parish Centre has been dated to around 950 AD. The building today is largely medieval, but was sympathetically restored from a near ruinous condition in the 1860s. The spire, replacing a 'Hertfordshire spike' on the tower, dates from this time. The pews and ornamental woodwork are Victorian, and the pulpit and canopy date from 1936.  

Today the church is a popular location for baptisms and weddings. It has a modern, purpose built parish centre, constructed in 1990, for church and community activities. The churchyard is open for burials and there is a peaceful garden of remembrance. St Stephen's Parent and Carer Toddler Group meets every Friday from 10-11.30am during term-time in a large church hall with a baby area, craft table, jigsaws, books, slide, trampoline, tunnel and ride-on toys. Summer and Christmas parties, day trips and parents' nights out are also arranged. There is a weekly cost of £1 per adult and 50p per child which includes tea/coffee, juice and biscuits.
