Gardening inspiration

The RHS's extensive flagship garden is around 40 minutes from St Albans (if the M25 is moving) and it's lovely. The gardens include formal borders, wild meadows, alpine areas, orchards, vegetable plots and show gardens. The new glasshouse was full of spectacular orchids when we visited. It's beautiful - garden perfection - and very inspiring at any time of the year.

There are several places to eat which are all very attractive, child friendly and reasonably priced for the quality of the food available. You might also be tempted by the large gift shop and the plant centre, which sells organic fruit and veg grown on site. We were so impressed on our most recent visit that we bought annual membership to give us and our toddler (who also loves it) free entry all year. Highly recommended. [Mar 09]
