On its last legs
What a shame. The once eclectic and oddly charming Claude's is really on its last legs. We popped in last night (21.05.09) to see how /if it had changed under the proudly advertised new management, having had a less than favourable experience the last time we visited under the previous team. We didn't last long. In fact, after an hour (but which time we'd only had our drinks and a rather sorry looking starter) we left - something we've never done before. Here's why. Service was unbearably slow. Not relaxed, informal service, just slow. From the wide range of tempting ciders on offer, we were told there was only one available. Our limp, disappointing starter eventually came - only to have shards of glass in the salad. Before our mains arrived, we witnessed 3 people from different parties send their food back. We took this as our cue to politely but firmly advise we would be paying for our drinks and leaving. On doing so, we overheard another party inform the waitress they would not be paying for their meal. This is such a shame. It's a great little venue and has such potential, and most people in St Albans will remember what a busy little place it used to be. The food was never brilliant but the atmosphere was jolly and cosy, and made a genuine change from the bulk of the high street offerings. But this place is being run into the ground. [May 09]

French Indulgence
It is admittedly lovely food and has a great atmosphere but portions sizes vary and it does seem a lot of money for what ultimately are pancakes just with a bit of cream cheese and smoked salmon and some Caviar you could get in a pot in Sainsburys or Waitrose. If you feel like treating yourselves go to Claude's! [Nov 08]
