The seat of the Earl of Verulam was built in the late 18th century by the architect Robert Taylor and has an extensive collection of family portraits transferred from the old 16th century Gorhambury House that was home to Francis Bacon, Viscount St Albans, a philosopher, lawyer and writer. The ruins of Bacon’s house still stand nearby (see Old Gorhambury).
If you are using a SatNav, use postcode AL3 6AE which will direct you via the Roman Theatre to the only gate to the estate which is unlocked.
