3 days in a row, 5 times in 2 weeks and service with a smile
Superb seafood spaghetti and just great service and lovely atmosphere. We can forgive the chairs, which look great but if we are truly honest aren't hugely comfy, especially if you intend on sitting for 3 courses. The food is just lovely, always good standard when we've been. A great place to go for quiet meal for two or with friends or family, I've also been to a private function there and that was also great. The chocolate mousse isn't really a mousse, it's thick and absolutely delicious, everyone should experience their chocolate mousse in their lifetime! We went in 3 days in a row, and 5, maybe six times in two weeks, to be honest we lost track. Well worth a visit. Get better chairs and I'll give them the 5th star.. [Nov 11]

odd chairs
Food was good and was a good price. Service was friendly and effective. Decor (in particular the plastic chairs) felt a little odd, but this place gives the big chains a run for the money. Certainly worth checking out. [Sep 11]

Great food in a lovely restaurant
We were visiting St Albans for the first time during a 2 week trip to the UK (we're from Canada) and we wanted something authentic and not a chain. The decor and menu at Blue Plate caught our eye and we popped in and had a wonderful meal. We started with the tapatizers and just asked the kitchen to surprise us with whatever they recommended and they didn't disappoint - whitebait was crisp on the outside, tender on the inside; the pate was simply divine, and all very well presented. I was craving pasta and had a wonderful carbonara and the portion size was excellent; my husband had a burger and was ecstatic to find a restaurant that grilled the bun!!. The staff were knowledgable, attentive and we especially enjoyed the open kitchen so you can see all the dishes being prepared. If we were St Alban's residents we would definitely be regulars. Highly recommended!! [Aug 11]

Chain-free and good
With the plethora of chain restaurants in St Albans, usually with staff that are usually pleasant enough but not really THAT interested in your well-being, it is a refreshing change to go to Blue Plate Kitchen.
Individual and caring would be the two words that come to mind. We weren't particularly hungry but fancied a tasty meal and a nice bottle of wine. Both were achieved with great aplomb on our visit, with a shared, generous and tasty portion of hummus and (wholemeal) pitta bread to start, followed by a burger and salad, and the ravioli special for mains. The chef asked what dressing we would like on the salad and made it fresh on the spot, the freshness reflected in all the food. Fantastic!
Service attentive but not overbearing - the best combination - and all-in-all superb value for money. Definitely we will return. [Mar 11]

Nearly there: less 90s muzak, more oomph please!
We had a good meal here. The service is friendly but not overbearing, the place is nicely done up with a contemporary feel, and there is plenty to choose from on the menu, all of it good value. We started by sharing some appetisers, including mozzarella balls, Thai crabcakes, and breaded whitebait. These were all quite tasty, but we had a feeling that they were largely pre-prepared and warmed up for us. Our mains - fishcake and chips, and burger and chips - were very good but not outstanding. We liked it enough to go back, but hope that next time there'll be much less M People on the soundtrack. It's not the early 90s anymore, guys. [Jan 11]

Why go to chain restuarants when you can go to Blue Plate?
To start my boyfriend and I ordered some tapatizers to share. Each dish was full of distinctive flavors, tasted fresh and cooked to perfection. For the main I had Spaghetti Seafood. I was dubious about this dish because the sauce was described as an 'olive oil sauce' and sounded quite bland. However, it was quite the opposite. For desert we had the Toffee Pudding which again was delicious due to the creamy sauce and cinnamon twist.
The service is very fast and staff are friendly and approachable. The decor is modern with a great atmosphere. To top it off the prices are extremely reasonable. I would highly recommend this contemporary restaurant to anyone wanting a light snack or full three course meal.[Nov 10]

Buon Tappetito!
We discovered ‘tappetisiers’ last night in Blue Plate Kitchen: delicious mini dishes of exciting recipes that are ideal for sharing. Not quite starters, not quite tapas, but certainly tasty and exceptional value for money. Blue Plate Kitchen sports a light, bright decor with lovely local artwork adoring the walls. Add friendly staff and it makes for an informal evening out. It’s refreshing to see an independent place standing up against the chains which are dominating our city. [Nov 10]

FABULOUS FOOD
What a find....Being an Italian myself I am very fussy about Italian food, I am so pleased that Blue Plate Kitchen has opened as I was having to travel to Brookmans Park or London for a good Italian meal. Its modern cooking and I loved the tapas option for light eating...although we ended up ordering the whole tapas menu because the food was just mouth watering, the fish tasted like fish which is a rareity these days. I also loved the friendly atmosphere, very relaxed so much so i have been back on my lunch break for a cheeky glass of wine, you can eat or drink in this place, I'm not sure enough people know about it though, zizzi and all the other chains seem to be pulling in the crowds, why I dont know as for the same price or less they can have top notch food in Blue Plate... Highly recommend [Sep 10]

Fresh and Tasty
We ate lunch there on Saturday and the food exceeded our expectations. The Tappetizers were perfect to share when everything sounded so good, a little taste of just about everything! At £10 for 4 small plates it's excellent value especially given the quality of the food. Please support this great little restaurant, it's so nice to have a choice that's not part of chain! [Jul 10]

Great Meal
We wholeheartedly recommend this newish restaurant. Three of us had an excellent meal-3 courses, some side dishes and wine for £26 a head. It was particularly refreshing to have the sharing tapas style starters-the whitebait was delicious. All the food was beautifully cooked and presented and the staff were quietly observant of our needs. On a Saturday night when other restaurants were busy this was quiet. We have seen other restaurants come and go in these premises but hope it will soon get the customers it definitely deserves. [Jun 10]

Blue Plate Review
Contemporary decor, but still felt welcoming and comfortable. 6 dining. We had Starter/Main/pudding/coffee and plenty of wine. £25 per head Great value for money. You don't have starters, you have 'Tapatizers' which was fun and, if in a group, you get a great assortment. Mains were simple with fresh ingredients. Puddings, I went for the cheese, for the price you got a really decent selection. service was just as I like it. Take your time and relax. For the same price as a pizza chain you get something which is infinitely more memorable. [Feb 10]
