Best for books

  • All children living in St Albans receive free Bookstart books at 6-9 months, 18-30 months and 3-4 years via their health visitor, library or nursery. Under-5's can also enjoy the Bookstart Book Crawl at any library.
  • There are two libraries in St Albans (Central and Marshalswick) and a further four in London Colney, Redbourn, Wheathampstead and Harpenden. The mobile library service stops in St Albans, Park Street, Chiswell Green and Bricket Wood every week. The home library service will deliver books to you if needed. More on libraries.
  • The Oxfam Bookshop, 8-10 Catherine Street (Tel: 01727 861589) is a real treasure trove. Local authors often give talks and books signings here.
  • Waterstone's St Albans has readings, signings and special events for all ages.
